Thursday's have all of the sudden become the busiest day of my entire week. I joined a mom-to-mom's group through my church...which is basically a "small group" for mom's that meet once a week. We talk, eat, & then do some kind of Bible Study. I really enjoy it & have met some really sweet mom's. They also provide childcare..which is a break for me..& gives Emmi-Reece the chance to play & interact with other children.
We started the study "5 conversations you must have with your son/daughter" a few weeks ago. Obviously..if you have boys..you choose son..and if you have only girls..then you do daughter. But if you have BOTH...like me..then you are forced to choose. That was hard for me because who on Earth ever wants to have to make that kind of choice???? It almost felt mean to me. But...I figured that I would end up reading many a book trying to raise teenage girls so I decided to do the book on "son's" this time. Plus, with Greg being in the military & being away alot..I felt that I needed to gain some extra knowledge on how to raise Gavin to be a Godly man..since Greg won't always been around to help with that. So anyway..great study so far! I am really enjoying it & learning alot of new things along the way.
Last week we talked alot about David..and the incident he had with Bathsheba. For those who are not familiar with the story...it is pretty easily summed up. David (who was called " a man after God's own heart") decides to take a stroll on his rooftop...as he is looking over the city..he notices this really beautiful girl taking a bath. (hello...where's the shower curtain???) So David sends someone out to find out who she was...and was told that her name was Bathsheba (thankful names got better over time) and that she was married to Uriah (one of the soldiers). Then he sent for her & slept with her. Yes, she ended up pregnant! (can't you see this one the cover of gossip magazine?) After hearing this news..David sent for her husband (again, who is at war) and tells him to come home & get some rest. (aka..sleep with your wife) But Uriah did not go home. He actually slept at the palace entrance. David realized that Uriah never went home and asked him why..and Uriah responded by basically saying that his men were at war..sleeping out in the open...and in tents..and he didn't feel right being layed up in his king-sized bed, down comforter, & his wife by his side. David said.."well stay here tonight and go home tomorrow". Like, helloooo...go home and sleep with your wife dangit! Uriah never would go home so David tryed getting him drunk..hoping then he would want to go home. That didn't work either...so with that being said David plotted to have the army put Uriah on the front line..making it easier for him to be killed. The army did as they were told..and Uriah was killed. Eventually, David sent for Bathsheba & she moved to the palace to become one of his wives. So ALL of this..to cover up David's sin. Imagine the sleepless nights David had trying to cover up his sin? As, many of us have trying to cover up our sin.
Basically what this brought us too was talking about self-control..which is one of the fruits of the Spirit..and that is no accident. Our children are NOT born with a natural desire for self-control; therefore it's up to us to teach them it's importance. Had David seen Bathsheba bathing..and turned his eyes from it...he may have not sinned..& ended up in the situation that he got himself in. And again...that's all about self-control. And if you're like me...you lack it! I'm definetly NOT a peeping Tom with hopes to see some man bathe (ew)...but I may or may not lack self-control in not eating the million Reese's hearts I stocked up on after Valentine's Day.
I will continue to write about this study on my blog. And I would highly recommend that at some point that you do this study yourself. =)
